FAQs for Group Cleanses

Q: If I really need my energy for my job, will I need to take time off during the cleanse?
A: Not if you do the preparation phase (Week 2) fully. Week 2 of our program allows your body to slowly adjust to being without sugars, caffeine and processed food. This is not a starvation cleanse and there is no calorie counting. Day three is typically the day that most people feel lower energy as your body begins mobilizing the toxins out. If it is possible, plan your schedule accordingly. After the low energy day, you will have more energy than ever before, so you will make up for anything you didn’t get done, and then some!
Q: What will a sample day look like?
A: You’ll be eating three meals and two snacks a day, depending on your hunger level. You’ll be enjoying lots of freshly prepared vegetables and clean protein sources. Things that you may not be familiar with yet are green smoothies, green tea, vegetable broth, and the detox bath. Ideally, you will employ an optional enhancement such as gentle exercise, meditation, journaling, etc.
Q: Do I have to juice?
A: No. Juicing has many detoxifying benefits but we recognize that most people do not have a juicer. You can purchase fresh, unpasteurized vegetable juices from Whole Foods or even Starbucks now! The easiest and most economical way to get the nutrients from a few big glasses of fresh juice is through Juice Plus, a whole food supplement made from the juice of 25 nutrient dense fruits and vegetables. It is about $1.50/day versus $8 for a fresh bottle of juice. Please contact us here with questions.
Q: Do I have to eat greens?
A: This question reminds me of the statement, “If you keep doing what you always did, you’ll keep getting what you’ve always gotten.” Greens should be the foundation of the human diet. They are so incredibly rich in phytonutrients, minerals, vitamins, enzymes, and even absorbable protein. They help prevent cancer, repair your whole body, improve digestion and elimination, and give you energy through the roof! We can almost guarantee that you will grow to love them. We have many different ways of getting greens that will help you start to love them. Sneaking spinach or kale into a smoothie is an easy place to start. Give it a try and you will be shocked! That said, if it is a deal breaker for you, then you will certainly benefit from the rest of the cleanse without greens. But don’t cheat yourself on this one!
Q: What if I am on medications?
A: Continue to take any medications your doctor has prescribed for you. If you are on any blood thinners, please notify your doctor that you will be adding leafy greens to your diet so that they can monitor your medication as you adjust to this dietary change. If you routinely take over the counter medications, you may be able to cut back or eliminate those entirely as root cause of your symptoms are removed through the cleanse. If you are a diabetic, you will probably be able to reduce your medication, and should closely monitor your blood sugar. If you are under a doctor’s care, please check with her before making dietary and lifestyle changes.
Q: Do I have to use a protein powder?
A: No. We offer several options for the protein shake that do not include powders. Almond butter, hemp or chia seeds, and tofu are examples of whole food proteins sources for the shakes.
Q: I have never heard of some of the ingredients on the shopping list. How am I going to find them?
A: For your first trip to the store we recommend visiting whole foods, if possible. There are typically several workers in the produce isle that are happy to help you with your shopping. You could also go shopping with a knowledgeable friend.
Q: What if I don’t like the broth?
A: Either don’t drink the broth or modify the recipe. The broth, although very helpful in the detox process, is not a deal breaker. We are so proud of you for taking this step to better health. Do what you can. People usually do the cleanse better and better each time!
Q: Can I do this if I have a family with small children or picky eaters?
A: Definitely. A lot of kids really enjoy the shakes, and what a wonderful thing to incorporate into their diets at such an early age! It may be helpful to add dates to give it extra sweetness. It’s so easy to customize smoothies – just pour out a glass for yourself before adding the dates or honey to theirs! Lots of kids enjoy the broth and butternut squash soup. Your family does not have to stick to the plan but there is nothing on the plan that they would not benefit from having. When I cleanse, I keep the family meals very simple and incorporate some of the cleansing dishes into their meal. If your family doesn’t enjoy the cleansing dish you prepared, there are more leftovers for you! I have had bad experiences on other cleanses.
Q: I have had bad experiences on other cleanses. How do I know this cleanse is right for me?
A: There are some crazy cleanses out there – we’ve probably done them! Our experiences helped us to create this simple, whole food cleanse, which is basically clean eating. If you do Week 1 according to our guidelines, you will minimize cleansing reactions, where you feel tired, or like you’re coming down with a cold for a day. Cleansing reactions are normal, and a sign that the cleanse is working! So if you can take a day or so of feeling yucky, you will be repaid endless days of feeling wonderful! Please contact us if you have more concerns.
Q: Will there be any opportunity to meet in person?
A: If you live in our local area, yes! We have many opportunities to meet up with fellow cleansers and one/both of us. Check the Events page! If you are cleansing from afar, please connect with us as often as possible through Facebook, email, and conference calls.
Q: Do I need to buy a lot of expensive supplements?
A: No. We have some suggestions to enhance your cleansing experience, like Juice Plus, a probiotic, and Vitamin D in the winter, but you can certainly benefit greatly from the cleanse from eating the food alone!
Q: Do I have to be a vegan?
A: No you do not. Lisa is a vegan, and Charlotte is not, so we have tested out this plan both ways! We do recommend limiting any meat consumption to a couple times a week, and sticking with really clean sources like free range, organic chicken, low mercury fish, and organic free range eggs. We also have lots of recipes for protein rich vegetarian meals that include legumes, tofu, tempeh, nuts, seeds, and greens.
Q: What is the age range for this cleanse?
A: We have had people as young as 13 and as old as 85 do this cleanse with great results! As this is simply a clean eating plan, with a few enhancements, anyone at any age can benefit, at any time of the year. There is never a reason not to eat healthy! However, we suggest our younger cleansers take special care to get enough calories, eat anytime they are hungry, and do not try to limit portions. Sometimes younger women get obsessed with weight loss, and we would emphasize to them that a healthy glow is the most attractive state, not a skeletal body. We feel this cleanse can set up our younger cleansers for a lifetime of healthy habits! Eating the Ultimate Rejuvenation way will help anyone achieve their ideal weight the healthy way. For our senior cleansers, just be sure to notify your doctor if you are taking any medications, especially blood thinners or insulin.
Q: Will I have diarrhea and be tied to my toilet bowl?
A: Most likely not. In fact, because we remove common digestive stimulants from our diet (like coffee and gluten), there may even be a digestive slow down. We have many holistic suggestions for keeping your bowels moving daily.
Q: I already eat healthy.
A: You are in good company! We are very happy that many educated and healthy eaters cleanse with us. We think it’s because educated health seekers recognize our plan as an overall, healthy eating program built upon sound nutrition and wellness principles. Despite knowing what to do, and actually doing it, most of us can still benefit from clear guidelines, expert support, and community. Committing to a program or plan of action often increases awareness of the things we do that aren’t part of that plan. Many cleansers are astounded in Week 1 of our program by all the things they would have normally shoved into their mouths without thinking about it. Small indulgences add up, and often become more regular than we realize. This is especially true for people with kids, and kid food everywhere.
Q: What if I don’t want to quit my coffee and wine?
A: Well, we wish you would because you’ll feel sooo much better. We have had many cleansers who thought they couldn’t do without their coffee/wine, but persevered, and felt better than they had in years. AND they never went back to the daily habit. That said, we get it, and wouldn’t want you to skip this valuable program because of these beverages. Even without avoiding coffee and wine, you can still significantly upgrade other aspects of your nutrition and lifestyle, so maybe eventually you won’t feel you need your coffee and wine. So we would suggest you do what you can of the cleanse this time. You will see benefits. Then trying it again in the future, maybe going coffee/wine free the next time around.
Q: How is Fall Cleansing Different?
A: When we cleanse in the spring, we are transitioning from cold to warm weather, shedding our winter coat, and clearing out the accumulated toxins and heaviness from the winter. The recommended foods for spring are light, low fat, low sugar, with lots of leafy greens and sprouts. We also consciously increase our activity level and shake things up a bit.

On the other hand, in the fall, we are simultaneously clearing out the accumulated summer heat, and preparing the system for the cooler weather. So we focus more on grounding foods like root vegetables, healthy fats, and clean proteins – foods that fortify us and prevent us from getting all dried out and anxious in the winter.

A fall cleanse also strengthens the liver. Over the summer, the liver can get overheated, diminishing its ability to perform its detoxification functions. When that happens, a toxic sludge (called “ama”) forms, which is comprised of waste products that we weren’t able to break down or eliminate. “Ama” is defined as something which harms or weakens. You can really feel the effects of excess ama – a lethargy, malaise, or physical/emotional depletion. Are you feeling that right now? If so, that is a sign your body could really use a good cleanse.

Our cleanses are very gentle, and especially in the fall. This approach is called “purvakarma” – a gentle rebalancing and fortification, without destabilizing the body or mind. Scott Blossom, an Ayurvedic doctor explains, “The key to purvakarma is that it’s a suspension of bad habits. Only then can you have space to establish the good habits you need to create the kind of health and vibrancy you want for your life.” We promote exceptional nutritional and self care practices as well as a regular routine. In the cooler months, regularity (of routine) promotes regularity (of elimination), as well as focus and calm, all of which can be problem areas in the cold weather, if you know what I mean.

A regular cleansing schedule has many benefits, and cleansing in the fall and spring each have their own unique gifts. Many participants in our program return to cleanse with us season after season. Although the overall cleanse format and basic information are similar for each of our cleanses, the focus is slightly different, depending on the time of year. Cleansers often tell us that they feel that they go a little deeper, incorporate different aspects of the cleanse, and maintain more of the “cleansing lifestyle” for longer periods every time they cleanse with us. There really is a cumulative benefit to regular cleansing!
